Creating Japanizer dictionaries

All the dictionaries we prepared were not enough? You wanted to create your own? Fear not! Here are the steps to create your very own Japanizer dictionary.

Before we begin I’ll clarify a few things. Japanizer dictionary is just an xml file, that contains several special tags and the rest are the entries with translations.

Ok, so after all this knowledge you just gained you are ready to create your first dictionary!

  1. Create a file named animals.japanizer containing:

    <?xml version=’1.0′ encoding=’UTF-8′?>
    <root>
    <title value=””/>
    <options groups='{“f”: 1, “l”: 1}’/>
    </root>

  2. Now edit a title tag by setting a value attribute to anything you want! Like so:

    <title value=”Cool animals”/>

  3. Awesome, now it’s time to add some entries (put them after the options tag).

    <entry key=”cat” kanji=”” kana=”ねこ” romaji=”neko” s=”1″/>
    <entry key=”dog” kanji=”” kana=”いぬ” romaji=”inu” s=”1″/>
    <entry key=”turtle” kanji=”” kana=”かめ” romaji=”kame” s=”1″/>

  4. And that’s it! Your dictionary file should look like this:

    <?xml version=’1.0′ encoding=’UTF-8′?>
    <root>
    <title value=”Cool animals”/>
    <options groups='{“f”: 1, “l”: 1}’/>
    <entry key=”cat” kanji=”” kana=”ねこ” romaji=”neko” s=”1″/>
    <entry key=”dog” kanji=”” kana=”いぬ” romaji=”inu” s=”1″/>
    <entry key=”turtle” kanji=”” kana=”かめ” romaji=”kame” s=”1″/>
    </root>

    The only thing that’s left is to check whether your dictionary works. Open Japanizer options, click on Dictionaries tab, then click on Add Custom, select your dictionary, click Save and navigate to a page, that contains some of the words in your dictionary.

    It works! That was the basic way of creating a Japanizer dictionary. If you have a csv fle you’d like to make an dictionary of or an anki2 file you are in luck. We have developed a few scripts that makes creation of Japanizer dictionaries easy. More about them (and mysterious options tag) here.
